Sherman brought WHS to new heights

Stephanie Sherman was great at making jumps. That's why no one should have been surprised when she successfully made the transition from high school to college, remaining a consistent winner throughout her track and field career.

Sherman, a 1991 graduate of Watertown High School, holds Cyclones records in the 100- and 400-meter hurdles, and the long, triple and high jumps.

The highlight of her WHS career came during her senior season, when she became the first Frontier League girl to become a state champion in outdoor track and field. She did so by placing first in the triple jump at Dietz Stadium in Kingston. She made history in another way at Kingston, too, becoming Section 3's first girls state champion to also place in another event in the same meet, finishing second in the long jump.

From there, it was on to Cedarville University in Ohio, where she was a two-time NAIA national champion in the outdoor triple jump. Sherman's national championship in 1992 was Cedarville's first in outdoor competition.

Including indoor and outdoor events, Sherman was a 10-time NAIA All-American and a 12-time NCCAA champion/All-American.

Sherman holds Cedarville records in the indoor 50-yard hurdles, long jump and triple jump, and the outdoor long jump. She shares the school record in the outdoor triple jump.

She was inducted into the Cedarville University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001 and the NAIA Hall of Fame in 2003.

Now 35, Stephanie Forrest and her husband, Daniel, have a 3-year-old daughter, Hannah, and live in Rockledge, Fla. Stephanie participates in church activities and volunteers with the Rockledge High School track and field team.
