DEPAUVILLE — A memorial service for George W. Towers, 90, Old Town Springs Road, will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Theresa, with the Rev. Donald W. Briant, pastor of Depauville United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Wellesley Island.
Mr. Towers died Tuesday at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown, where he had been a patient since April 14.
He was a farmer for a time and owned and operated Towers Riverside Cottages, both on Wellesley Island. In 1938, he worked on the construction of the Thousand Islands Bridge and also with the Army Corps of Engineers to map the St. Lawrence Seaway. He later worked for the Milton Weir family on Welcome Island as a caretaker and landscaper.
Born May 7, 1917, on Wellesley Island, son of George and Alice Irene Brown Towers, he attended a one-room schoolhouse on the island.
He enlisted in the Army on Jan. 7, 1942, and served in the Army Air Forces with the 482nd Service Squadron, 5th Air Force, as an aircraft armorer. He participated in campaigns from New Guinea to the Philippines, including the Battle of Leyte Gulf. He received the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, Good Conduct Medal and Philippines Liberation Ribbon and was honorably discharged Aug. 27, 1945, as a sergeant.
He married Edith Pearl Harden on March 24, 1945, at Fineview Methodist Church with the Rev. Philip D. Mang officiating. The couple lived on Wellesley Island until moving to Depauville, and spent winters in Florida. Mrs. Towers died June 18, 1998.
Mr. Towers enjoyed fishing and golf, serving as a caddy at the Thousand Islands Club on Wellesley Island at age 8. He was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons, Order of the Eastern Star and John B. Lyman American Legion Post 904, all at Alexandria Bay, and Depauville United Methodist Church.
Surviving are a daughter and her husband, Brenda and Stephen Forman, Watertown; a sister, Minnie Hartman, Alexandria Bay; a grandson, nieces and nephews.
Four brothers, Charles, Howard, Earl and David "Quinten," died before him.
