POTSDAM — Clarkson University has received a $1.4 million state matching grant for construction of a student center, slated to begin next summer.

State Sen. Joseph A. Griffo, R-Rome, supported the funding through the new Higher Education Capital Matching Grants Program in the recently enacted 2008-09 state budget.

Clarkson is among 33 institutions in the HE Cap program that must raise $3 of private funds for every dollar they receive from the state for construction.

"This is an initiative of the Council of Independent Colleges, to secure a capital fund that would serve two purposes; one, to help leverage private donations in support of capital projects on our campuses, and in the process stimulate economic development because of construction and potentially other jobs that result," college President Anthony G. Collins said. "We're certainly pleased Senator Griffo supported our particular application."

The college will select an architectural firm later this month to design the new student center, which will be built adjacent to its Schuler Educational Resource Center beginning next summer.

Clarkson plans to identify green technologies and designs that can be incorporated into the building, as with the Technology Advancement Center already under construction on the hill campus.

"It's a wise investment in our local economy as it will create a variety of jobs for our region, improve our environment and enhance our education choices," Mr. Griffo said in a statement. "We are fortunate to have an institution of Clarkson's reputation and vision focused on providing new and relevant educational opportunities to the area, as well as contributing to the well-being of the entire north country community."

The Clarkson University Student Association has designated a portion of its activity fee to go toward the project. The student funds will provide $7 million, and constitute the matching private funds toward the grant, over the course of 10 years.

"This is kind of a terrific story to tell, because our students stepped forward and created a campus improvement fund," Mr. Collins said. "What's obviously impressive about it is it shows their feeling toward the institution and their commitment to improving the campus for future students."

The student center is expected to cost between $15 million and $25 million, and will include spaces for students to study and relax, as well as cafes and offices for campus organizations.

Clarkson also is raising money for the project from alumni and friends of the college.
