BELLEVILLE — Do you know what your blood pressure is? Have you had cancer screening?
A group of local health-care providers will have a host of screenings and tests available for free at today's Wellness Expo at Belleville Henderson Central School.
Open to the public, the 5th annual event runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the gym.
The group, led by Wellness Connection and North Country Prenatal/Perinatal Council, will be working together to do the testing for the first time.
"Most of us have participated in the past anyway," said Faith E. Luspik, health planner for Jefferson County Public Health Service. "So this gives us a joint purpose."
The group is trying to reach the uninsured. They also will have information on programs offered for people with health issues. "So after you know you have high blood pressure, you can know what you can do to get services," she said.
The sixth-grade science extravaganza will coincide with the expo. Pupils have contributed 40 exhibits to go along with the 35 booths from health and wellness organizations from all over the north country.
Tiffany L. Pritchard, the school district's health coordinator and organizer of the event, said there will be exhibitors performing massage therapy, Japanese Reiki therapy, hypnosis and sound healing.
The school's physical education classes will encourage adults to try out "Dance Dance Revolution," a video game in which players try to step at the right time on a sensitive pad according to directions on the screen "which the kids just love," Mrs. Pritchard said. "It gets your heart pumping for sure."
Another physical education class will perform a dance at 6 p.m. "It's something a little bit different this year that hasn't been there in the past," Mrs. Pritchard said.
New booths this year include Oasis Wellness Spa of Sackets Harbor, Center for Hypnosis and Sound Healing of Chaumont and Northern Area Health Education Center of Canton.
"It's nice for everyone to see what's out there," Superintendent Rick T. Moore said.
