MALONE — Harry E.G. Upham, 93, Malone, died Wednesday at Alice Hyde Medical Center.
Mr. Upham was believed to be the oldest retired member of New York State Police Troop B, known as the Black Horse Troop. He retired in 1959 after 23 years of service. He then was a security officer at the General Motors Central Foundry, Massena, where he retired in 1976.
Born Aug. 15, 1914, in Guelph, Ontario, son of the Rev. George Goldsworthy and D. Eunice Payne Upham, he moved with his parents to the United States in 1928 and graduated from high school in Philadelphia.
He joined the Army in 1944 during World War II and served on the destroyer escort USS Leland E. Thomas in the Pacific theater. He was honorably discharged in March 1946.
He married Barbara D. Gamble at her family home in Malone on Dec. 30, 1939, with the Revs. Robert R. Cruthers and George Upham officiating. She died May 3, 1989. He married Helen Wright Miller on Nov. 3, 1990. She died June 27, 1998. He married Marjorie Boynton on Feb. 14, 2001.
Mr. Upham was a member of First Congregational Church of Malone, New York Retired Troopers Association, Malone Masonic Lodge, Order of the Eastern Star, Shriners and American Legion Post 219.
He enjoyed doing crossword puzzles.
Surviving besides his wife are two sons and a daughter-in-law, David G., Ontario, N.Y., and John G. and Joan, Norwood, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
