Community Bank seeks bigger site

CANTON — Community Bank is negotiating with the owners of Maple Hill Properties for a site to build an administrative center.

The bank is looking for a location to move employees from its office at 91 Main St. because of overcrowding.

Community looked at the former Jubilee grocery in Midtown Plaza, but a state grant that would have helped pay for renovations didn't come through. It has considered several Canton properties with the hopes of breaking ground soon.

Community Bank Director of Real Estate Michael F. Joyce didn't return a call and Maple Hill co-owner Gregory J. Walsh said he couldn't comment.

The two sides are talking but there are issues with water and sewer lines, Supervisor David T. Button said.

Maple Hill, a 72-acre commercial and residential subdivision between Route 11 and the Grasse River across from McCarthy's Restaurant, is in the village but doesn't have municipal water and sewer service.

"The village and the town are working to facilitate that," Mr. Button said. "Community Bank has a lot of incentives to relocate this facility, not only out of the area, but out of state. We're going to pull out all the stops to keep them here."

Although there has been some development of the subdivision since it was created in 1989, including an office building and a house, the lack of municipal services has made growth slow.

The village and town are looking at grant possibilities for a pedestrian bridge linking Maple Hill with land across the Grasse River, perhaps at Bend in the River Park, that would have water and sewer pipes available, Mayor Charlotte C. Ramsay said.
