Probe of 3-vehicle fatal crash continuing; charges pending
TUESDAY, MAY 13, 2008

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department continued its investigation Monday into a three-vehicle crash Sunday afternoon in which an 11-year-old town of Richland girl was killed.

Morgan R. Rabetoy, 11, was pronounced dead shortly after 9 p.m. Sunday after being involved in the accident on Route 11 in the town of Watertown near Falls Road. (See obituary, B4.) Seven other people were injured.

Sheriff's detectives said Monday that they were still trying to determine what caused a van driven by Janine A. Smith, 46, Woodville, to veer into the northbound lane and collide with two oncoming vehicles. Detectives reconstructed the accident scene Sunday, and on Monday they were still examining information gathered from the scene.

Police said Miss Smith remained hospitalized at Samaritan Medical Center on Monday. Erik Carr, 2, who was riding in the same vehicle as Miss Rabetoy, was airlifted to a Syracuse hospital for overnight observation, but he was not seriously injured, according to police. Police described injuries to five others involved in the crash as "minor." All of the injured are from Richland and were traveling together in two vehicles to Watertown.

Police said charges are pending upon the conclusion of their investigation.
