There are four children in the town of LeRay who will be able to look up to their dad, and mom too, and say "detective."

Actually, James R. Goodman's title will be investigator, with the state police Bureau of Criminal Investigation. And in less than two weeks, Judy L. Goodman will be Detective Goodman with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department.

Sheriff John P. Burns said Wednesday he is returning Mrs. Goodman to the job he gave her in June 2004. She didn't hold the position long the first time, since she was suddenly thrown into being a single parent while her husband was called to active duty with his Reserve unit, deployed to Iraq.

Mrs. Goodman joined the department in 1997 and left late in 2002 to try working for the Onondaga County Sheriff's Department, but returned a short time later.

"We were talking about moving to Syracuse, but I absolutely hated Syracuse," she said Wednesday.

She has been the school resource officer at Indian River Central School, Philadelphia, for two years and will remain in that position until the conclusion of the school year, Sheriff Burns said. But her promotion to detective is effective May 25, he said.

Mr. Goodman is originally from Georgia and Mrs. Goodman is from Wisconsin. Both came to Jefferson County as Fort Drum soldiers. They are the parents of a 9-year-old, a 6-year-old and 31/2-year-old twins.

Although Mr. Goodman's promotion to investigator has been announced by state police, he is again on Reserve duty, his wife said, and will not be able to fill the position until June 2009.

Sheriff Burns said he will accept applications from within his department for the Indian River position.
