The town of Hounsfield has secured a source for providing water to Watertown International Airport.
The Hounsfield Town Council approved buying wells from the Red Maple Trailer Park, Route 180, for $45,000. The wells will be able to supply both District 2 and District 5, the upcoming airport water project.
The agreement also protects the five acres around the wells from development. The town will provide free water for four years for the existing sites at the trailer park, plus up to 10 additional sites. The town also will install a master meter for the park.
The wells have a 200,000-gallon-per-day capacity, while the town uses about 60,000 gallons now. The cost of setting up the wells will be about $300,000, but it will be included in the District 5 project.
"We're pretty optimistic based on reports from the airport that this will be funded at this time next year," Supervisor Jean H. Derouin said.
The wells could be an emergency source of water for the village of Sackets Harbor, as well.
"We think we can produce water fairly cheaply out of these wells, too," Councilman Stephen H. Lee said after the meeting.
The town has increased the budgeted line item for legal costs for the District 4 project, also known as the Storrs Road project. The council approved adding $50,000 to the original budgeted $25,000.
The contractor will be digging and laying the pipe beginning Monday.
Discussing the Galloo Island Wind Farm, Mr. Derouin expressed his disappointment with the state Department of Environmental Conservation decision to take lead agency over the town's Planning Board.
"We have not heard anything from Upstate Power on whether they want to contest this," Mr. Derouin said.
