Police schedule campaign to enforce seat-belt laws
FRIDAY, MAY 16, 2008

Another statewide campaign geared toward enforcement of seat-belt laws begins Monday, and will extend through June 1, state police have announced.

Intensified enforcement, usually done twice a year, began in 1999. Statistics indicate that compliance with the law has increased in recent years, but an estimated 15 percent of motorists in New York still fail to buckle up, according to a state police press release.

Data from fatal accidents across the nation in 2006 show that 55 percent of the victims were not wearing safety restraints, police said.

Under New York law, all front-seat passengers must wear restraints, as must back-seat passengers under age 16. Children under age 4 must be restrained in a federally approved safety seat that is attached to a vehicle seat.

Children ages 4, 5 and 6 must be secured in a child-restraint system, except those who are more than 57 inches tall or weigh more than 100 pounds.
