MASSENA — Village Police Chief Timmy J. Currier will announce his candidacy Tuesday for the 118th state Assembly District.
Mr. Currier, 42, is seeking the Democratic and Working Families lines. He declined to discuss his candidacy Friday because he wants to wait until Tuesday. Mr. Currier surfaced as a candidate earlier this month, saying he wants to correct inequities in the taxing system that burden middle-class working families.
He is registered without party affiliation but has filed to become a Democrat. That change will take effect after the election.
"I wished him the best of luck," said Jack R. Sauve Jr., town Democratic chairman.
Mr. Sauve, who also is vice chairman of the party's county committee, said it's premature for endorsements. The county committee will meet Wednesday and the town has a session scheduled for June 1.
"I know he will be addressing the committee," Mr. Sauve said.
St. Lawrence County Legislator Gregory M. Paquin, Massena, once was considered a possible Democratic candidate but now supports Mr. Currier.
"I hope they'd listen to what Tim has to say," Mr. Paquin said. "You're going to find someone who's hard-working, a level thinker and someone who cares a lot about the north country."
Jefferson County Legislator Addie J. Russell, Theresa, and Pamelia Town Councilman Timothy E. Kelly both are considering a bid for the Democratic line.
The Jefferson and St. Lawrence county committee chairs do not plan to attend Mr. Currier's announcement.
"We're quite hopeful that we're going to have a strong candidate in Jefferson County," said Sean M. Hennessey, Jefferson County chairman. "We'll hopefully be having an announcement next week."
Mr. Currier's announcement is at 4 p.m. at the Beach Street community center.
Like Mr. Currier, political independent Donald J. Lucas is seeking the Working Families line for the 118th. Mr. Lucas is a Massena fishing charter operator and Alcoa retiree.
