CAMP VICTORY, Iraq — Fort Drum's 10th Mountain Division has taken authority at the Multi-National Division-Center headquarters in Iraq. The 3rd Infantry Division, led by Maj. Gen. Rick Lynch, previously held command.
As the division in authority, the 10th Mountain Division will be responsible for command and control of U.S. and Coalition forces in south and southeast Baghdad, Karbala, Najaf, Babil and Wasit Provinces. Objectives include assisting with training and transitioning Iraqi Security Forces, aiding economic development and helping with governance.
Maj. Gen. Michael Oates, commander of 10th Mountain Division, said in a news release that the division is committed to continuing the advances in the region's security.
Lt. Gen. Lloyd J. Austin III, commander of Multi-National Corps in Iraq, said during the ceremony that over the past year, the division reduced attacks by 89 percent. This allowed the opening of a community center, several schools and local businesses.
About 1,000 Fort Drum-based soldiers will staff the MND-C headquarters.
