Comptroller to help people get back unclaimed funds

ALBANY — Think the state might owe you some money? Here's your chance to find out.

Representatives from the state comptroller's office will be available at three area events in July to help New Yorkers find out if they are owed money.

"New York has $9 billion in unclaimed fund accounts. We want to return this money to its rightful owners," said Thomas P. DiNapoli, state comptroller. "The money belongs to New Yorkers. We want to give it back."

Data provided by the comptroller's office shows that there are 36,519 unclaimed accounts containing $4,346,196.47 in Jefferson County. In St. Lawrence County, there is $3,131,393.56 in unclaimed funds in 27,103 accounts. In Lewis County, there are 4,507 unclaimed accounts totaling $610,695.11.

Area events include:

■ July 15 to 19: Lewis County Fair, Bostwick Street, Lowville.

■ July 23 to 27: Ogdensburg International Seaway Festival, Library Park, Washington Street, Ogdensburg.

■ July 24 to 27: Oswego Harborfest, West Bridge Street to Seneca Street, Oswego.
