GOUVERNEUR — The village Board of Trustees acted swiftly to fill vacancies left by the resignations of most of its Planning Board.

The village had a special meeting Thursday to appoint David J. Walters, Diane L. Monroe, David L. Spilman Jr. and Kenneth Nicholas to fill seats that had been held respectively by Anne N. Audet, William M. Scozzafava, William C. Foster and George Love.

"They are all agreeable to serve," Mayor Dorothy L. Vorce said. "The board is very happy with these folks."

The mass resignations came over the past week as the culmination of years of disagreements between members of the village board and the Planning Board.

The village hasn't received a resignation letter from Mrs. Audet, but expects one. In any case, her term already had ended and she was serving on the board on a month-to-month basis, so a resignation is not needed, Mrs. Vorce said.

The village also has not yet received a resignation from David J. Fenlong, who didn't return a call asking for comment on whether he'll continue on the board. Mrs. Vorce said she also has not spoken with Mr. Fenlong.

"Hopefully, we will not have to replace him," she said.

The new Planning Board will have its first meeting at 7 p.m. July 10 in the municipal building, where it will consider several requests, including a sign for Fashion Kraze.

The previous board rejected a proposed sign for the new Main Street business because members wanted the words "name brands" and "discount prices" removed.
