Watertown police are investigating the theft of a military Humvee from the parking lot at the Leso-Leano Reserve Center on South Massey Street.

Police said the theft occurred sometime between 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and 6 a.m. Wednesday. A man walking his dog about 6 a.m. notified police that a front gate to the parking lot was left open. Reservists confirmed about an hour later that they were missing the truck, Detective Sgt. Richard C. Wood said.

Sgt. Wood said a Paddock Street resident called police at about 1:30 a.m. after the person heard a loud vehicle pass by, so it is believed the vehicle left Massey Street traveling east on Paddock Street.

Sgt. Wood said the 1998 American General vehicle had been parked in a row with four other Humvees. It is described as being green camouflage with a canvas top. Its contents include a fire extinguisher and a first-aid kit.

There are two white boxes on it, one on the hood and one on the rear bumper. One box contains the company number, 77CR479E, and the smaller box has the marking HQ05. The vehicle has no identification number and is lacking an odometer.

The Army's Criminal Investigation Division is assisting with the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call city police at 786-2233.
