HANNAWA FALLS — Two people face charges for stealing a 500-pound spool of copper from S&L Electric last month.

Thomas J. Scovil, 25, of 929 Route 72, Potsdam, was charged Monday with third-degree burglary and fourth-degree grand larceny, both felonies, and a misdemeanor charge of making a false written statement, St. Lawrence County investigators said.

Terisa A. Billings, 20, of 731 Route 310, Canton, was charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, a felony, and making a false written statement.

Mr. Scovil is accused of stealing about $1,475 of copper from S&L Electric's storage garage on Route 56 and blaming someone else for the crime by filing a false statement, Detective Sgt. Albert R. Duquette said.

Miss Billings, Mr. Scovil's girlfriend, is accused of selling the stolen copper to Massena Metals on South Raquette River Road and blaming someone else for the crime by filing a false statement, investigators said.

The copper was stolen the night of June 22. The copper spool was taken from the garage and rolled to Route 56, where it was loaded onto a truck, investigators said.

Mr. Scovil was arraigned in Stockholm Town Court and sent to the St. Lawrence County jail, Canton, on $15,000 cash bail or $30,000 bond. Miss Billings was arraigned in the same court and released to probation supervision.
