GUILDERLAND — All five north country competitors missed qualifying for match play at the 86th New York State Golf Association Men's Amateur Championship on Tuesday at Pinehaven Country Club.

Watertown's John Bufalini, fresh off his city men's championship win on Sunday, came the closest of the area players, missing the match-play cut by just a single stroke. Bufalini shot a 5-over-par 76 on Wednesday after an opening round of 75 to finish at 9-over-par 151 and in a seven-way tie for 34th place. A score of 150, or 8 over par, was good enough for a four-way playoff for the final three spots in the 32-man match-play field beginning today.

Former Watertown resident Nick Ambrose, who lives in Getzville, finished a shot behind Bufalini at 10-over-par 152, shooting rounds of 74 and 78.

Potsdam's Nick Miller was at 14-over-par 156, with scores of 77 on Tuesday and 79 on Wednesday. Shane Dyer of Watertown rebounded with a 75 on Tuesday, but his 84 on Monday left him at 17-over-par 159.

Bufalini's teenage son, Michael, shot 82-80 for a two-day total of 20-over-par 162.

Matthew Stasiak of Fox Valley Club in Lancaster, Dominic Bozzelli of Locust Hill Country Club in Rochester and Thomas Muto Jr. of Sodus Bay tied for medalist honors at 2-under-par 140.
