The recent announcement that a Clarkson University research facility will receive $10 million over the next decade reflects the important work being done there and at the college in general.

The Center for Advanced Materials Processing at Clarkson, which conducts scientific and engineering research, has been redesignated a Center for Advanced Technology by the New York State Foundation for Science, Technology and Innovation.

The Clarkson center specializes in high-tech materials synthesis and processing for industrial use. Much of its research focuses on colloid and surface science and fine-particle technology. The center explores "smart" materials, fuel cells and solar energy as well as biomolecular and pharmaceutical applications.

Speaking about the awards to Clarkson and other New York research facilities, Gov. David A. Paterson said: "These investments demonstrate our commitment to strengthening the state's innovation economy. By fostering an environment that encourages technological progress, we are giving our institutions and companies the tools needed to strengthen and modernize the economies in Western New York and the north country as well as the rest of the state."

The award is good for Clarkson and Potsdam, ensuring that the institution's cutting-edge research will continue. The work conducted at institutions like Clarkson benefits business and industry, enhancing the competitiveness of New York companies.

This is a worthy investment.
