LOWVILLE — This year's annual showcase of local artists and artisans will also provide an artistic outlet for children.

A children's art barn will be a new feature at the eighth annual Lewis County Harvest for the Arts, scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 13 at Maple Ridge Center, East Road.

At the art barn, children will have the opportunity to work on different artistic projects, including mask and fan decorating, weaving, sculpting, woodworking, quilt tying and face painting.

"Through exploring of several diverse mediums, we are hopeful to encourage creativity in the daily lives of our children and build an appreciation of fine arts in our community," states a release from festival organizers.

The annual event, started in 2001 by Operation Lowville, is now being organized by the Adirondack Mennonite Camping Association, with help from other local volunteers. The association owns and operates a portion of Maple Ridge Center, including most of the buildings.

"We are hoping to build on the success of prior Harvest of the Arts festivals to provide a wholesome fun-filled day where the community can join together to celebrate and encourage the artists among us in a beautiful, natural setting," said association President Dr. Shereen E. Palmer in a statement. "We want to honor the years of Operation Lowville's hard work by joining their effort to serve and strengthen their community through this very special event."

The admission fee will be $1 for children ages five to 12 and $2 for those ages 12 and older. Children under 5 will be admitted free.

Local artisans' work — including pottery, baskets, paintings, jewelry and original drawings — will be featured at the festival.

Several local musical groups — including the Atkinson Family Bluegrass Band, Lowville Academy and Central School select chorus and Lowville Village Band — will also perform throughout the day. Various food vendors will also be on hand.
