POTSDAM — Greenwood Dairy Farm will receive a $433,565 grant for an anaerobic digestor to generate renewable electricity, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Wednesday.
Greenwood Dairy Farm on Route 310 is one of St. Lawrence County's largest dairy operations with approximately 1,200 cows. Owner Jon R. Greenwood, who operates the farm with his wife, Linda R., was not available for comment.
The farm is among 15 New York individuals and businesses set to receive more than $1.6 million in grants for renewable energy and energy efficiency systems. The funding was announced in Washington, D.C. as part of awards for 600 projects in 46 states and the Virgin Islands.
"Our renewable energy program is an extremely competitive national program," Patrick H. Brennan, state director for U.S.D.A. Rural Development, said in a statement. "Renewable energy and complementary energy efficiency systems help farmers and rural businesses improve operations and save money."
Mr. Greenwood, a member of the county's Industrial Development Agency, is a former county legislator.
