MASSENA — A Main Street man was charged with assault Wednesday after reportedly using a knife to make an eight-inch cut on his girlfriend's back, village police said.

Adam Gauthier, 20, of 71/2 Main St., faces a charge of second-degree assault. He was arraigned in Village Court and sent to St. Lawrence County jail, Canton, on $50,000 cash or $100,000 bond.

The unidentified woman also had several bruises and small cuts on her legs, including some from a previous incident, police said. She was taken to Massena Memorial Hospital for treatment.
