GOUVERNEUR — A Democratic caucus to nominate candidates for the upcoming village election isn't likely because of a lack of party organization.
Republican Chairman Eldon B. Conklin has scheduled the GOP caucus for 9 a.m. Sept. 6 at the town offices to pick nominees for two village trustee positions. Incumbent George E. Harder plans to run. Mr. Conklin said he hasn't heard from incumbent John E. Washburn, who wasn't available for comment, on his intentions.
Other potential Republican candidates haven't come forward.
"I've asked two or three people that are supposed to get back to me and they haven't," Mr. Conklin said.
Whoever the Republicans pick might not face Democratic opposition.
Former Gouverneur Committee Chairman Robert G. Bowman has moved and is a member of the Canton Democratic Committee.
"I've thrown a lot of hints out there," Mr. Bowman said. "At least temporarily, there's no existing Democratic committee for Gouverneur."
Democrats who want to have a caucus have a small window of time to appeal to St. Lawrence County Democratic Chairwoman June F. O'Neill.
"There's paperwork that June has to fill out to allow them to have a caucus," said Jennie H. Morrill, deputy Democratic commissioner with the county Board of Elections. "I don't believe anyone has indicated any interest."
The last date to have a caucus is Sept. 15. There is a required 10-day public notice, making Sept. 5 the last day to notify the county Board of Elections.
