Jefferson Community College started its fall semester on Monday with a record 911 new- and part-time students.

The overall enrollment was near 1,700, about the same as last year.

The college's ability to consistently draw so many students from the region year after year reflects the strength of its teaching, facilities and leadership.

For many recent high school graduates, military people and community members who want to continue their formal education, JCC has been an invaluable institution, a place where dreams are pursued.

Jefferson County leaders should note the record freshman class enrollment as well as the steady stream of eager students who take advantage of the college's offerings at a very affordable price.

Institutions of higher education must keep growing, improving, innovating and creating. JCC released its facilities master plan in July, which features dorms, a higher-education center and renovations to several buildings.

President Carole A. McCoy and the Jefferson Community College Foundation unfolded JCC's strategic master plan earlier this month, which sets the long-term academic design for the college.

Among the goals for the near future is to create a collaborative learning center that would combine tutoring, the library, counseling and intervention services.

Expanding the online program, creating an adult learning facility, establishing a center for energy resources and one for entrepreneurial studies are just part of the plans. The college also seeks to form partnerships and create facilities for students to achieve four-year degrees locally.

College leaders are already working on the five-year plan named "The College of Choice." Vital leadership will continue to communicate purpose and direction to the students, who began their new semester Monday with anticipation and enthusiasm.

County officials and the community must stand ready to support the college's educational quest. We must help it build on its successes and grow in ways necessary for preparing students to excel in a rapidly changing world.

The fall semester has begun. It's a new beginning.
