South Jefferson dominates boys cross-country meet in season opener

TURIN — Seven South Jefferson runners placed in the top 10 en route to victories over Altmar-Parish-Williamstown, 17-44, and South Lewis, 15-49, Tuesday in a Frontier League-opening boys cross-country meet.

Nate Traynor took first place for the Spartans (2-0), followed by Sean Hanson in second. Steve Fritton finished fourth.

Ian Allardice placed fifth for APW (1-1), which topped the Falcons, 15-49.

Sam Anderson led South Lewis (0-2) with a third-place finish.

BEAVER RIVER 15, CARTHAGE 49

Matt Cheney led the Beavers to a season-opening victory, 15-49, at Beaver Falls. The Beavers placed eight runners in the top 10.

Pat Brady finished seventh to lead the Comets.

WATERTOWN 15, SANDY CREEK 48

Nick Lynch secured first place, and the Cyclones claimed the top five spots during the season-opener at Sandy Creek.

Connor Luberto was the Comets' top finisher in sixth place.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

SPARTANS TAKE TWO

Leah Williams and Carly Vantassel placed second and third, respectively, as South Jefferson defeated South Lewis, 15-49, and Altmar-Parish-Williamstown, 15-48, in a season-opening league meet in Turin.

Victoria Campanian nabbed first place for the Falcons. APW beat South Lewis, 15-49.

BEAVER RIVER 15, CARTHAGE INC.

Karlee Duffer paced the Beavers over the visiting Comets in their season opener.

Morgan Clary finished in 10th place for the Comets.

SANDY CREEK 15, WATERTOWN INC

Watertown's incomplete squad won the top four places, but the host Comets got the victory in both teams' season opener.

Jillian Busby crossed the finish line first for the Cyclones, nearly three minutes ahead of all other competitors.

Heather Schad led Sandy Creek in fifth place.

GIRLS SWIMMING

CARTHAGE 56, LOWVILLE 46

Ashley Peck (200, 500 free), Emily Sauter (50, 100 free) and Maggie Pogue (100 fly, 100 back) each won two races apiece as the Comets earned a Frontier League "B" Division victory at Carthage (2-2).

Lowville fell to 4-2, 2-1.

INDIAN RIVER 106, ADIRONDACK 79

Jessica Cruse took the 200 and 500 free and competed on the first-place 200 and 400 free relays to lead the Warriors (4-1) to a "B" Division victory at Philadelphia.

Emily Washburn claimed the 100 free and 100 backstroke to lead Adirondack (2-1).

HOLLAND PATENT 87,

SOUTH JEFFERSON 79

Laura Howard captured the 50 and 100 free and contributed to the winning 200 medley relay to help propel the Golden Knights (1-1) to an interdivision victory at Adams.

Freshman Meagan Scott claimed the 200 and 500 free and swam on the fastest 400 free relay for the Spartans (0-4).
