Canton teenager cited with DWI after one-vehicle accident

A Canton teen was charged with driving while intoxicated after he was involved in a one-vehicle crash at 4:40 a.m. Saturday on Spile Bridge Road in the town of Oswegatchie.

State police said Jeffrey F. Hopper Jr., 17, of 164 County Route 16, was eastbound in a 1994 Jeep when he lost control around a curve, causing his vehicle to go off the right side of the road, hit a barn at 56 Spile Bridge Road and flip over. He was taken by Ogdensburg Rescue Squad to Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center, Ogdensburg, for treatment of cuts to the face and abdomen. His blood alcohol content was not available.

Mr. Hopper was additionally charged with failure to use designated lane, speeding and driving a motor vehicle without a license.

The following people also were charged with driving while intoxicated and related offenses:

■ Brad J. West, 33, Route 12E, Three Mile Bay, was arrested at 9 p.m. Sunday by Jefferson County sheriff's deputies on charges of aggravated driving while intoxicated and unlawful possession of marijuana on North Market Street.

Deputies said he had a breath test reading of 0.18 percent blood alcohol content, matching the state's standard for aggravated DWI.

■ Eric J. Cody, 22, of 1205 Hunters Run Road, Victor, was charged Sunday with aggravated driving while intoxicated and speeding after being stopped on Route 11 in the town of Canton, state police said. His blood alcohol content was 0.18 percent.

■ Joseph J. Stagnitta, 35, of 2317 State Highway 37, Fort Covington, was charged with DWI and moving from lane unsafely after being stopped on County Route 53 in the town of Bangor, state police said. He registered a 0.12 percent BAC. The state standard for DWI is 0.08 percent.

■ Rusty A. Clifford, 18, of 1165 Northwoods Road, Russell, was charged Sunday with DWI and unlawful possession of marijuana after being stopped on County Route 17 in the town of Russell, state police said. His BAC was not available.

■ Joseph C. Berkalow II, 20, of 7418 County Route 74, Prattsburgh, was charged Sunday with DWI, DWI with drugs and unlawful possession of marijuana after being involved in a one-car accident on Sugar Island Trail in the town of Potsdam, state police said. His BAC was not available.

Mr. Berkalow was driving west on Sugar Island Trail when he lost control of the car and hit a tree. A passenger, Gregory Seager, no address available, was taken to Canton-Potsdam Hospital, Potsdam, with an ankle injury.
