OGDENSBURG — The Frederic Remington Art Museum received a record number of submissions for its Amateurs Only! exhibit.
The show is held every other year and will be on display Oct. 28 to Jan. 16.
This year, the museum received 128 works from 48 amateur painters, sculptors and photographers. Agnes Murray, the sole juror for the exhibit, selected 40 pieces by 37 artists. Submissions came from as far away as New York City, but most were from within a 25-mile radius.
"It's fun and surprising to see wonderful work come seemingly from the woodwork," said Laura A. Foster, museum curator.
The number of artists submitting work has doubled since the exhibit was held in 2006, when 24 offered their pieces. In 2004, that number was 23.
For most of the artists, this will be the first time their work will be on display, although some showed pieces at the 2006 and 2004 exhibits, Ms. Foster said.
"It's exciting for people to exhibit their first artwork in public," she said.
Ms. Foster could not explain the sudden increase in submissions, but said the museum has gotten better at targeting people and organizations with connections in the art community.
The exhibit is advertised mainly through press releases, e-mails and word of mouth.
The exhibit began in 2004 as a means to draw more museum members from the community. The only requirements to submit pieces are that the artists must be older than 18 and residents of the state. Works do not follow any theme and any medium is accepted. This year's exhibit includes painting, digital photography and sculpture.
"It's a great way to get people who might otherwise never come," Ms. Foster said.
