STAR LAKE — A doctor's office next to Clifton-Fine Hospital was heavily damaged in a fire Saturday, St. Lawrence County fire officials said.

The Star Lake Volunteer Fire Department responded at 7:23 a.m. to a report of a blaze at the clinic, 1014 Oswegatchie Trail. The fire started in the basement of the clinic and burned a hole in the main floor.

Several fire companies — Fine, Newton Falls, Cranberry Lake, Piercefield, Gouverneur and Harrisville — battled the blaze. One firefighter suffered smoke inhalation.

The office was closed at the time of the fire, the cause of which remains under investigation.
