New faculty and staff at Jefferson Community College

Jefferson Community College, Coffeen Street, recently welcomed the following new members of faculty and staff for the fall semester:

Michael Avery joined the liberal arts division as an instructor of English. Mr. Avery taught developmental composition and was a writing tutor at California State University, Oakland. He received an associate's degree from De Anza College, Cupertino, Calif., a bachelor of arts degree in English literature from University of California, Berkeley, and a master of arts degree in English composition and creative writing from California State University.

Alice M. Brockway, formerly of Carthage, joined JCC as assistant professor of nursing in the science division.

She has extensive professional experience as an advanced-practice registered nurse and is certified as a gerontological nurse practitioner. She was a member of the Army Nurse Corps Reserve for eight years. Most recently, Ms. Brockway was a nurse practitioner with Shawsheen Medical Associates in Andover, Mass., where she was responsible for primary care of adults.

She holds a nursing diploma from New England Baptist Hospital School of Nursing, Boston, Mass., a bachelor of science degree in nursing from the University of New Hampshire, Durham, and a master of science degree in gerontology from University of Massachusetts, Boston. Ms. Brockway is the recipient of numerous honors, including a Nursing Excellence Award from Lowell (Mass.) General Hospital in 1991.

Lawrence M. Danforth joined the science division as an instructor of mathematics. He earned an associate of science degree from Corning Community College, a bachelor of science degree in applied mathematics and a master of science degree in applied statistics from Rochester Institute of Technology. He has been a visiting lecturer and instructor at Corning Community College since 1998. Mr. Danforth has tutored in physics and mathematics and is the service bureau director for Region III of the National Junior College Athletics Association.

Frank A. Doldo, Watertown, was appointed director of student activities in February. Mr. Doldo was deputy executive director for Volunteer Transportation Center before joining JCC.

He has spent nearly 13 years managing student life/residential experience activities at the college level. Most recently, Mr. Doldo was director of campus life at Paul Smith's College, where he was responsible for residence life, campus safety and student activities. He has held positions at Hesser College, Manchester, N.H., Marist College, Poughkeepsie, and Lyndon State College, Lyndonville, Vt. Mr. Doldo holds a bachelor of science degree in business administration from Marist College.

Deborah M. Elliott was hired as assistant college registrar in May. She worked for four years at Genesee Community College, Batavia, most recently as program specialist for the Accelerated College Enrollment program and prior to that as technical assistant to the dean of math, science and career education.

Ms. Elliott has extensive experience in Banner Web software and customer service expertise gained at Flexben Corp., Troy, Mich., and Ortho-Clinical Diagnostics, Rochester, where she oversaw all aspects of customer service. She received a bachelor of science degree in math and secondary education from SUNY Brockport.

Tanya L. Hoistion, Calcium, was appointed learning skills specialist responsible for disability services, placement testing and College Level Examination Program testing in the Learning and Success Center. Ms. Hoistion taught Spanish and tutored English as a second language for the Jefferson-Lewis Board of Cooperative Educational Services.

She attended JCC and received a bachelor of arts degree in elementary education from Evangel University, Springfield, Mo., and a master of science and education degree in literacy from SUNY Potsdam.

Carleen Huxley has joined the Melvil Dewey Library staff as assistant librarian in charge of reference and circulation services. Ms. Huxley came JCC from Bartlesville, Okla., where she served as reference librarian at Bartlesville Public Library and spearheaded several programs for teenagers and library patrons.

She earned a bachelor of building arts degree in architectural history from Savannah (Ga.) College of Art and Design and a master of library and information science degree from the University of Oklahoma.

Timothy M. La Goy has joined the liberal arts division as an instructor of history. Mr. La Goy has served as an adjunct professor in history at several north country institutions including SUNY Oswego, Tompkins Cortland Community College, Dryden, and most recently, Onondaga Community College, Syracuse.

He graduated from Jefferson Community College with an associate of arts degree in liberal arts and earned a bachelor of arts degree in history and a master of arts degree in American history from the University at Albany.

Brandon Maxamis an instructor of English in the liberal arts division. Mr. Maxam had been an adjunct instructor of English at JCC and SUNY Oswego. He has taught a creative-writing course at St. Luke Health Services, Oswego, each year since 2005.

He earned a bachelor of arts degree in English writing arts and journalism and a master of arts degree in English from SUNY Oswego. He has been published in numerous north country publications and in 2003 was a finalist in the Oswegosites.com Creative Nonfiction Award for his piece "Putz."

Maria C. Middlestate, Adams, has joined the science division as a lecturer in the nursing program. Ms. Middlestate is a registered nurse at the inpatient mental health unit at Samaritan Medical Center, where she has worked since 1994. She has been an adjunct instructor of nursing at JCC for the past 10 years. After earning an associate of applied science degree in nursing from Jefferson Community College, Ms. Middlestate received a bachelor's degree in nursing from SUNY Plattsburgh.

Charlene M. Moser, Croghan, has been appointed an accountant. Ms. Moser was the office accountant at D&D PowerSports in Lowville. She is treasurer for the village of Croghan and for the Lewis County Mennonite Medical Aid Plan, as well as owning and operating her family's dairy farm. Ms. Moser earned an associate of science degree in business administration from JCC and a bachelor of science degree from SUNY Institute of Technology at Utica-Rome, with a double major in accounting and business and public management.

JoAnne Rhubart, Lowville, was appointed grants officer in April. Ms. Rhubart came to JCC from Hand In Hand Early Childhood Center in Lowville, where she was executive director and director/head teacher. While at Hand In Hand, Ms. Rhubart secured grants totaling more than $4 million for both construction and program needs of the center and obtained grant funding for other child care centers in Oneida and Lewis counties.

She holds an associate of applied science degree in early childhood education from SUNY Cobleskill and a bachelor of arts degree in psychology from Utica College of Syracuse University.

Donald A. Richards joined JCC in June as director of campus safety and security. Mr. Richards is responsible for developing and implementing all facets and programs of security and safety on the campus and serves as liaison with enforcement agencies. He has more than 20 years' experience with the Onondaga County Sheriff's Department. He has completed professional training in the fields of antiterrorism, public safety critical incident management and dignitary protection, among others. Most recently, Mr. Richards was an adjunct professor of criminal justice at Cayuga Community College, Auburn, and a special investigations unit manager for Nationwide Insurance. He received an associate of applied science degree in criminal justice services and a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice management from Empire State College, Albany, and earned a master of public administration degree from Marist College.

Roy C. Romano has been appointed instructor of English in the liberal arts division. Mr. Romano has been teaching for nearly 10 years, most recently as a resident faculty member at Mohave Community College in Arizona. He was a visiting professor at University of Ulsan and a visiting lecturer at Keimyung University, both in South Korea. Mr. Romano earned a bachelor of arts degree in English writing from the University of Pittsburgh, Pa., and a master of arts degree in English from Duquesne University, Pittsburgh.

Rebecca M. Shakespeare, Theresa, joined the technology department as an information systems specialist. Ms. Shakespeare came to JCC from Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, where she was operation systems manager and was responsible for database creation, management and maintenance as it related to gift acknowledgments, billing, collection and reporting.

She earned an associate of applied science degree in computer information systems from Ivy Tech State College in Indiana and a bachelor of science degree in information studies from Florida State University, Tallahassee.

Ronald G. Theobald Sr.,Watertown, has been appointed instructor of psychology in the liberal arts division. He came to JCC from Credo Foundation Drug Rehabilitation Center, where he was responsible for assessing and coordinating the placement of individuals into Credo and other treatment facilities in New York. He also provides individual, family and group therapy for CMS Counseling/Psychological Services.

Mr. Theobald holds associate's degrees from Jefferson Community College, in liberal arts, and Onondaga Community College, in business administration. He also received a certificate in criminal justice from JCC. Mr. Theobald received a bachelor of arts degree in psychology and a master of science degree in counseling/human services from SUNY Oswego and a doctorate in psychology from Southern California University, Los Angeles. He is certified in cognitive/behavioral therapy, ADD/ADHD and rational emotive therapy for addictions.

Janet Wells, Sackets Harbor, was appointed entrepreneurship coordinator for the Entrepreneurship Center. She has been an adjunct instructor in the business division and a Jefferson's Table visiting chef for the past two years. She brings more than 22 years of business experience to the Entrepreneurship Center. Ms. Wells owns a catering company, The Farm House Kitchen, and is a consultant in the culinary field. She is a graduate of the University of Vermont, Burlington, and has completed advanced professional development courses at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park.
