Adams Center
Releases album: Elizabeth Avery,a pianist and a graduate of South Jefferson Central School, Adams, saxophonist Brian Horner and composer M. Zachary Johnson released an album, "Serenade — Music for Saxophone & Piano," on Oct. 14. The record was produced by Sound Artist Records, Nashville, Tenn., and is available at www.CDBaby.com, www.Amazon.com, and iTunes among other retail outlets.
The group has performed at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall, Steinway Hall, Mannes College of Music, all in New York City, and Glimmerglass Opera's Young Artist recital series in Cooperstown.
Ms. Avery, daughter of David and Margaret Avery, Adams Center, received degrees in music education and collaborative piano performance from SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music and the University of Michigan, respectively. She has pursued studies at the Prague Conservatory in the Czech Republic and is working toward a doctoral degree at Eastman School of Music, Rochester. Potsdam
Professional recognition:Nancy Rutledge,vice president for patient care services at Canton-Potsdam Hospital, has published an article, "The 411 on HCAHPS," in Nursing Management Magazine, the nation's premier magazine for nurse leaders. In her article Ms. Rutledge provides information about the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid's new patient safety reporting and measuring system.
Amy Nugent,registered nurse and in-patient surgical director at Canton-Potsdam Hospital, has recently been certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center as a Pathway to Excellence Reviewer. This program recognizes organizations that are committed to nurses and their practice.

Watertown
Completes officers school: Brett Michael Berkman,son and stepson of Julia and Gordon Grigg, Watertown, graduated from U.S. Marine Corps Officer Candidate School, Quantico, Va., on Aug. 15. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in a ceremony Aug. 17 at Sackets Harbor Battlefield.
Lt. Berkman, also son of the late Michael F. Berkman, graduated from Watertown High School in 2004 and from Boston (Mass.) University in May with a bachelor of arts degree in political science.

Receives scholarship:SUNY Potsdam student and Clarkson Army ROTC cadetJames Sanderswas presented the Lt. Gen. Timothy J. Maude Memorial Fund Scholarship at the annual Association of the United States Army convention in October in Washington, D.C.
The $2,000 scholarship was established in honor of the highest-ranking officer killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, attack on the Pentagon. The scholarship is awarded to two Green to Gold Program cadets selected from across the country. Gen. Maude's widow, Teri, and daughter, Karen, presented the award to Mr. Sanders. The Maude Foundation and the AUSA paid for the four-day trip for Mr. Sanders, his wife, Judy, and sons Blake and Matthew to attend the convention.
In June 2007, Staff Sgt. Sanders was selected for the Green to Gold Program, which helps active duty soldiers to attend college for two years to finish their degrees while earning commissions as second lieutenants. Mr. Sanders is a senior in the business program at SUNY Potsdam, with a 3.95 average.
Prior to selection for the Green to Gold program, Mr. Sanders served in the Army for 10 years including a 14-month deployment to Iraq as an armored-vehicle crew member with the First Infantry Division. His last duty was with the First Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, as a career counselor for 2-22 Infantry Battalion and 3-6 Field Artillery Battalion.
He has been an armored-vehicle crew member and career counselor at Fort Benning, Ga., Camp Casey, Korea, Fort Knox, Ky., Germany, Iraq and Fort Drum. After graduation next May, Mr. Sanders plans to be a military intelligence officer.

Selected for honors ensemble:Oswego High School seniorGarrett J. Robinson,son of William and Sonia Marie Robinson, Oswego, and grandson of Joseph and Beverly Robinson, Potsdam, has been selected by Bands of America to be a member of the national Honor Band in the 2009 Tournament of Roses Parade on Jan. 1 in Pasadena, Calif. The parade will be broadcast by ABC, NBC, CBS, Univision, HGTV, Telemundo, Travel Channel and Discovery HD.
The Bands of America Honor Band is a 300-piece national ensemble with winds, percussion and a flag and dance team.
Mr. Robinson was chosen from hundreds of applicants to be a member of this prestigious honors ensemble. He is a percussionist and will play tenor drums during the parade. To prepare, he will spend a week this month in Indianapolis, Ind., and another week during December in Southern California rehearsing for the performance.

Attend conference: Several north country residents were among 20 SUNY Potsdam students who recently attended the Ahkwesahsne and New York State Teaching and Learning Standards Orientation Conference at the Kanatakon School in Ahkwesahsne to learn more about the special aspects of teaching in a district with Native American heritage.

Miss Marshall is a freshman with an undeclared major. She graduated earlier this year from Hammond Central School and is the daughter of Barry and Patricia Burke.
Miss Rennie is a sophomore majoring in psychology and a member of the Psychology Club. She graduated in 2007 from Lowville Academy and Central School and is the daughter of Mark and Mary Rennie.
The SUNY Potsdam Honors Program, founded in 1998, seeks to provide an enhanced curricular and co-curricular experience for exceptionally talented students through special course offerings, unique opportunities for independent study, on-campus housing options and other programming.

Receives scholarship:Cazenovia College has awardedJudith M. Anderson,daughter of Eric C. and Jennifer Anderson, Henderson, the Lewis-Merrill Scholarship, an award of $1,000 per year for four years.
Miss Anderson graduated in June from Belleville Henderson Central School, Belleville, and is a freshman at Cazenovia, majoring in studio art. She also is a member of the women's soccer team.
