OGDENSBURG — Gerald Newtown, 96, Ogdensburg, died Wednesday at United Helpers Nursing Home.


Mr. Newtown was a conductor for 27 years for Rutland Railroad, later became a summer customs inspector and then was employed at St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center, retiring in 1972.


Born Aug. 13, 1912, in Ogdensburg, son of Curtis and Gertrude Sheils Newtown, he graduated from St. Mary's Academy.


He married Harriet Chamberlain on Jan. 14, 1942, in St. John the Evangelist Church, Morristown, with the Rev. Noel Zimmerman officiating.


Mrs. Newtown died Feb. 1, 1999.


Mr. Newtown enjoyed watching sporting events.


Surviving are three sons and their wives, Richard and Jackie, Parish, and Thomas and Judy, and Curt and Diane, all of Ogdensburg; a daughter, Martha Quintilliani, Waddington; a brother, John, Ogdensburg; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.


A grandson died before him.


The funeral will be at 4 p.m. today at Frary Funeral Home with the Rev. Terry LaValley officiating.


Calling hours will be 2 to 4 p.m. today at the funeral home.
