CARTHAGE — Sarah Johnson's 39 points set a school record for scoring in a single game — a mark formerly held by current coach Randi Smith — as Carthage rolled to a 60-34 nonleague girls basketball victory over New Hartford Saturday.
Johnson also grabbed 17 rebounds in the victory for the Comets, who improved to 4-3.
With the game in hand, Smith took the junior forward out in the final quarter. The coach, however, soon realized Johnson was one point shy of tying the record of 38 she set 22 years ago. Johnson re-entered to convert one more field goal for the record, and exited the game again.
Joey Percy pulled down nine rebounds for Carthage, and all six of Gabbi Kamide's assists were to Johnson.
