CANTON — St. Lawrence County will lower the tipping fee at its transfer stations from $99 to $97 per ton once lawmakers give final approval to the change Monday.
The Legislature's Finance Committee unanimously approved the change Monday at the suggestion of Solid Waste Director Karl O. Bender. Mr. Bender said the lower fee is in response to the Development Authority of the North Country's decision to reduce its tipping fee at the Rodman landfill from $41 to $39 per ton.
The minimum charge to bring a load of trash weighing less than 240 pounds to the county transfer station is still $12.54. That price includes a 4.5 percent fuel surcharge, lowered last month from 9.65 percent.
The surcharge was instituted last year to cover high fuel prices. Mr. Bender said the surcharge will probably be removed by April now that prices have fallen.
