ALEXANDRIA BAY — The village Board of Trustees enacted a six-month moratorium on the sale of the former Alexandria Bay Chamber of Commerce building on Market Street. The vote was unanimous.
Village Mayor Terry J. Robb said the village board would like to explore the possibility of developing the property with grant money rather than just putting it up for sale.
The village has been advertising the property on the village Website and Craigslist but residents and members of the Alexandria Township Historical Society argued Tuesday that it was not in the best interest of the village to sell the downtown property.
The 924-square-feet stone building dates back to the 1940s and has housed several organizations, including the Chamber of Commerce and the Lyman Boat Museum, according to the historical society.
The building has been vacant since 2005, when the Lyman Boat Society moved out. The Chamber moved out of the building in 1997.
