Incumbents prevailed in the north country's only two contested mayoral races Wednesday.

In Copenhagen, Mayor Kenneth R. Clarke defeated challenger John H. Drewes, 119-91, to earn two more years in the seat.

Mr. Clarke, a village trustee since 2002, was appointed mayor in May following the resignation of Michael R. Shew.

Trustees Gerald Snyder and Gary Parker also earned new two-year seats with 136 and 117 votes, respectively. Challengers Jeffrey Clemons and Robert Sullivan received 86 and 64 votes.

Kim Vogt also earned a one-year trustee seat, completing Mr. Clarke's unexpired term, with 155 votes. Jason Doyle received 34 write-in votes, while two others received one write-in vote apiece.

A total of 214 Copenhagen residents cast ballots Wednesday.

"We had a record amount," said Village Clerk Sue M. Parker.

In Theresa, Mayor Timothy H. Tanner defeated Trustee Donna L. Mansulla-Coppola, 113-64, to earn another two-year term.

Mr. Tanner also served as mayor from 2001 to 2003.

Ms. Mansulla-Coppola has served as a trustee for the past two years.

Meanwhile, Trustee Howard Schnettler Jr. and Thomas Roberts — running for the seat being vacated by Ms. Mansulla-Coppola — earned two-year trustee seats with 120 and 103 votes, respectively.

Two write-in votes were cast for James Vock.

Three villages in Jefferson and Lewis counties also had open trustee seats that had to be filled by write-in votes, since no residents filed nominating petitions for them.

In Evans Mills, Mayor Robert E. Boucher earned another two-year term with 29 votes, as did Trustee Brian W. Flack with 22 votes. David K. Fleming received 11 write-in votes to secure a second open trustee spot.

Allen L. Bush received one write-in vote for mayor and eight for trustee.

In Croghan, Trustee David Schneider received 21 votes to earn a new four-year seat, while Trustee Matt Nortz also earned a new term with 13 write-in votes. Five others also received write-in votes, but none with more than three.

In Port Leyden, Mayor Alan Scouten and Trustee Lynette Ripp were re-elected to two-year terms, but official results — including who received the most write-in votes for a second open trustee seat — were not available Wednesday night.

Several other villages in Jefferson and Lewis counties held elections Wednesday with no contested races.
