The Northern New York Autism Center wants to raise more than just money at fundraising events today and Monday.

Organizers also are aiming to raise awareness.

"We also need to dispel the myths that once you're diagnosed with autism there's nothing left for you," said Mary J. Dvorsky, administrator of the Northern New York Autism Foundation. "There are a ton of things. Autism is treatable."

Children are typically diagnosed at 2 or 3 years old with Autism spectrum disorder. The disorder's diagnoses include autism and Asperger's syndrome, which are developmental disabilities of neurological origin.

Raising awareness about Autism spectrum disorder is just as important as raising money to help support the center's programs, Mrs. Dvorsky said.

"It affects a lot of folks," she said.

The center will host a walk-a-thon at Salmon Run Mall, which will begin shortly after 8 a.m. today. People may bring their pledge sheets if they pre-registered, or they can just bring a donation when they show up at the event.

Mrs. Dvorsky said no donation is too small or too large.

The center will also host a spaghetti dinner Monday at the Italian-American Civic Association, 192 Bellew Ave. S. Takeout orders begin at 4 p.m., while people choosing to dine in may stop by starting at 5 p.m. The cost is $7 for adults and $4 for children.

The money will go toward the center and foundation's mission of helping every child with autism who comes to them for help, she said.

"We have over 100 families that go to our clinic, and we're always accepting more," she said. "We have a doctor from Texas that comes up, and he sees children every three months. We can find out whether or not they're able to stay on their treatment plans."

The center is at 103 S. Main St., Black River. Those interested in finding out more about the center can call its main office at 773-5405.
