Clarkson announced the captains for the 2009-10 season today and sophomore Scott Freeman will wear the "C" on his jersey.

Freeman, a native of Whitby, Ontario, led the team in scoring last season with six goals and 23 assists. He was one of three players to take part in all 36 games, despite playing most of the year with a rib injury.

He was given the team's Unsung Hero Award this season and his most recent goal, in game two an ECAC Hockey playoff series at Union College, was the 10,000th in the program's history.

Junior Matt Beca, who is 15 points shy of 100 for his career, will be one of the assistant captains. Beca scored 11 goals with 13 assists last year.

Sophomore Brandon DeFazio, a linemate of Freeman's, will be the other assistant captain. He finished with seven goals and 11 assists.

Freeman will be the first non-senior captain since Nick Dodge performed the role in the 2006-07 season. That year Clarkson won the ECAC Hockey Tournament and played in its first NCAA Tournament since 1999.
