A Harrisville man is accused of claiming he was robbed to avoid being charged with drunken driving.
James R. Deamer, 37, of 114 Fullerville Road, was charged Sunday with felony driving while intoxicated, third-degree falsely reporting an incident, providing a false written statement and three traffic violations, state police said.
Mr. Deamer was driving a van on County Route 23, Edwards, when he failed to negotiate a curve and the van went off the road and overturned several times, state police said. He flagged down a vehicle and told the driver to call 911 because he was robbed by a man with a handgun and the robber crashed the van, troopers said.
A passenger in the van, James Whited, 19, of 114 Fullerville Road, told authorities the story was made up so Mr. Deamer wouldn't be charged with DWI.
Both were treated at Clifton-Fine Hospital, Star Lake, for cuts. Mr. Deamer was arraigned in Fowler Town Court and sent to St. Lawrence County jail, Canton, on $5,000 bail or $10,000 bond.
His blood alcohol content was to be determined from a blood test taken, troopers said.
