A Watertown man was sentenced Friday in Jefferson County Court to consecutive one-year terms in the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building for twice violating an order of protection.

James R. Purvis Jr.,39, address not available, had pleaded guilty March 16 using a partial Alford plea to two counts of second-degree criminal contempt. By entering a partial Alford plea, he was able to plead guilty to the charges without admitting to all of the underlying facts in the case, thus avoiding a possible stiffer sentence if convicted of the crimes at trial.

He admitted at the time of the plea that he had arguments Sept. 13 and Nov. 8 with Michelle R. Ricks, who held an order of protection against him. He denied he shoved or struck her, as had been alleged in a grand jury indictment.
