Sen. Darrel J. Aubertine, D-Cape Vincent, has introduced a bill that would create a commission to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812.
If enacted, the commission would organize events designed to attract tourists to sites related to the War of 1812, such as Old Fort Niagara, Ogdensburg and Plattsburgh grounds, Fort Wadsworth and Sackets Harbor.
"Since the War of 1812, the United States and Canada have shared unparalleled peace and prosperity," said Mr. Aubertine in a statement. "By commemorating the anniversary of this war we are celebrating the lasting peace that has followed."
Assemblywoman Addie J. Russell, D-Theresa, has co-sponsored companion legislation in the lower house.
