CLAYTON — A Dexter couple is dead and another man was hospitalized following a two-car accident Thursday afternoon at Route 180 and County Route 3 in the town of Orleans.
State police said Albert L. Jackson, 58, and Carol A. Jackson, 54, of 17311 Evans Road, were pronounced dead at the scene. Peter B. Orvis, 50, of Route 180, Orleans, was flown by helicopter to Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown, for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
According to police, a 1992 Plymouth Caravan driven by Mr. Jackson was heading west on County Route 3 at 2:41 p.m. when it failed to stop at the intersection. The minivan carrying the Jacksons was then struck in the center of the driver's side by a northbound 2001 Isuzu Rodeo driven by Mr. Orvis. Both the minivan and the sport utility vehicle left the roadway, finally coming to rest off the northwest shoulder of the intersection.
Police had volunteer firefighters close all roads leading to the intersection for much of the afternoon. At least one of the victims was reported to have been ejected from a vehicle.
The roads were reopened at 8:40 p.m.
State police were assisted at the scene by the Clayton, Fishers Landing and LaFargeville fire companies and Thousand Islands Emergency Rescue Service. The State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene and will be conducting a full investigation into the collision.
No charges are pending at this time, police said.
