A new group for artists could be a breath of fresh air for its members.
Robert P. Hedden, Wellesley Island, has formed Plein Air Painters of the Thousand Islands Region.
"I formed it with no board of directors, officers or dues," said Mr. Hedden. "I'm just getting birds of a feather together."
The group's first event was May 13 and it's been meeting on the second Wednesday since then. Some weekend events also are held.
"It's an informal group for artists who wish to paint outdoors as a group and meet at specified sites and times," said Mr. Hedden. "This will provide the safety and comradeship of being outdoors in a group."
There are two plein air events coming up in the area. The Arts Association of Northern New York based in Sackets Harbor will host a plein air derby July 17 and 18 and Hawn Memorial Arts Alliance, Clayton, will host a plein air event on Aug. 7 and 8.
The North Country Artists' Guild hosted Plein Aire in the Square on May 16.
"Perhaps over time the Sackets, Clayton and a Watertown event could be combined into a Jefferson countywide event that could make the area a focal point for art," Mr. Hedden said.
The next event of Plein Air Painters of the Thousand Islands Region begins at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Thousand Islands Winery on Seaway Avenue, Collins Landing. The rain location is the Thousand Island Tourism Council also off Seaway Avenue, where painting of the ponds, falls, birches and bridge from under the picnic pavilion shelter is possible. It's open to all artists.
