BELLEVILLE — The academic leaders of the class of 2009 at Belleville Henderson Central School are Shannon L. Darou, valedictorian, and Meaghan M. O’Rourke, salutatorian. The vocational leader is Jenifer M. Pierce.

Miss Darou, daughter of Timothy and Janet Darou of Mannsville, has a 94.40 average. A member of the junior and senior National Honor Societies, she has participated in Whiz Quiz, jazz band, marching band, chorus, Foreign Language Club, FFA and Stream Watchers.

Miss Darou is also an active member of her church and has participated in community service activities such as the CROP Walk, the Heart Walk and visiting the elderly.

Miss Darou has been selected for an Alfred University Presidential Scholarship, a New York State Scholarship for Academic Excellence and an Air Force Math and Science Award. She plans to attend Cornell University, Ithaca, to major in animal science with the goal of becoming a veterinarian.

Miss O’Rourke is the daughter of Kevin and Maryann O’Rourke of Adams and has a 93.80 average. She has been a member of the junior and senior National Honor Societies and is treasurer of her class, the Library Club, the Foreign Language Club and the Art Club.

A WWNY Academic All-Star, Miss O’Rourke has participated in Whiz Quiz, Ski Club, soccer, Reality Check, the yearbook committee, peer mentoring and the Teenage Task Force.

She has volunteered through St. Cecilia Church’s youth group, the Children’s Tumor Foundation, 12 Hours for Darfur and the Neurofibromatosis Racers. She has completed three internships with the North Area Health Education Center.

Miss O’Rourke has received a St. Bonaventure’s Friars Scholarship and a New York State Scholarship for Academic Excellence. She plans to major in biology at St. Bonaventure College with the goal of becoming a medical doctor.

Miss Pierce, daughter of Donald and Beth Pierce of Adams, has a vocational average of 94.70. She has participated in the New Visions Health program through the Jefferson-Lewis Board of Cooperative Educational Services and Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown.

In addition to being a cheerleading captain, Miss Pierce has been involved in soccer, softball, peer mentoring and the Children’s Miracle Network 12-hour dance marathon.

Miss Pierce plans to attend Morrisville State College to major in nursing with the goal of becoming a nurse practitioner.
