Bryan L. White, confidential assistant to the city manager, has resigned from his job, effective Friday, to accept a similar position with the city of Canandaigua.
"I just want to get some new experiences and continue with the natural progression of my job," Mr. White said. "I've had a great experience here and I'm very fortunate to work with Mary and all of the department heads."
City Manager Mary M. Corriveau said she will open a nationwide search to fill the position. Mr. White has a bachelor's degree in political science from Ball State University, Muncie, Ind., and a master's degree in public administration from Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville. He was hired in December 2003.
"Mr. White's spirit has contributed to the atmosphere not only in the city manager's office, but throughout the organization as a whole," Mrs. Corriveau said in a news release. "This is an exciting career opportunity for Bryan."
Mr. White said he expects to begin his new position July 6. Canandaigua is along the northern shore of Canandaigua Lake; its population is roughly 11,300.
"One of the first projects he did was build a file that has all the city's contracts in it," Mrs. Corriveau said. "That project required him to look through a lot of agendas and he had to familiarize himself with what the city was doing and what types of services the city provides. Having that consolidated in one place has been a great asset over the years for the city."
Mr. White's new position will open a door that has been locked to him in Watertown. He will take over the role of city manager when Canandaigua City Manager Kay James is not in the office.
Mrs. Corriveau generally hands the reins over to Kenneth A. Mix, city planning and community development organizer, when she is absent.
"All of this is so new, it's going to be an exciting experience," Mr. White said. "It looks like it's going to be a lot of fun."
