Watch for pedestrians

As the school year nears an end, and the streets of Potsdam begin to fill with youngsters, I would like to remind motorists in Potsdam to be cautious of our pedestrians.

Each day I witness several near misses as pedestrians attempt to cross the walks in town. The most perilous crosswalk is the one that connects the Roxy Theater with the Main Street parking lot. Though the walk is clearly marked indicating the law is to yield to pedestrians, many motorists do not obey the signage, creating an unsafe walking environment.

If you are a pedestrian, I urge you to obey crossing signals, look both ways and only cross in properly marked places. We are lucky to have a bustling downtown with offerings for our youth through art lessons, a place to skate, a theater, excellent eateries and plenty of open spaces to enjoy. Please, slow down, and allow our youth (and residents) ample time and space to safely cross our streets.
