DEPAUVILLE — A Chaumont man was killed and three people were injured in a two-vehicle crash at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at county routes 54 and 125 in the town of Clayton.

Jefferson County sheriff's deputies said a vehicle driven by Robert B. Burkhard, 47, of 27374 Mill St., Chaumont, collided with a vehicle being driven by Leo R. Coleman, age and address not provided.

Mr. Burkhard was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr. Coleman was taken to Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown, and then transported to Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, for treatment of unspecified injuries.

Two unnamed passengers in the Burkhard vehicle were also taken to Samaritan Medical Center for treatment.

An investigation into the accident is ongoing, deputies said.

A rescue helicopter was initially requested at the scene but was eventually canceled, apparently due to inclement weather elsewhere, according to scanner reports.

A portion of Depauville Road was closed for most of Sunday evening.

Clayton, Depauville and LaFargeville fire departments and the Dexter ambulance squad assisted at the scene.
