Special events set for summer

GOUVERNEUR — The village recreation program and Riverview Park Association have teamed together for a joint operation this summer at the park.

Staff and resources from both organizations will come together so the playground will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The park also will sponsor a series of sport weeks and free Sunday concerts.

"Everybody's working together on this," park director Bonnie L. Weaver said. "The village has a lot of cool trips planned."

Village recreation director Casey T. Canell will set up his program for 5- to 14-year-olds at the park, to include arts and crafts. There also will be special Friday events, such as a soapbox derby, ice cream social, wood carving and firemen's day.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, his group will spend mornings at the Gouverneur library and afternoons at Sylvia Lake. Field trips will take place on Wednesdays. Some of the trips planned include Taylor Park in Canton, Postwood Park in Hannawa Falls, Westcott Beach State Park in Henderson and Cornell Cooperative Extension's Learning Farm in Canton.

The group will make a trip once a week to Kinney Nursing Home to play bingo with residents and share snacks, Mr. Canell said.

The Sunday concert series will be held at 5 p.m. weekly and began this week with Dale Streeter and Mike White. Upcoming performers, in the order of their appearance, will be Jerry Morin and Herb Hughes, Al Betrus, Stringfolks, Sweet Adelines and the St. Lawrence University chorus, Jack Kelly's Little Big Band, Blue River Boys, Canton Goldenaires, Northbound, and Dale Streeter and Mike White.

The rain location is the Gouverneur VFW.
