Beginning Monday, elementary school pupils in Watertown won't have to go far to have fun this summer.

The Watertown Salvation Army will host its 15th annual free summer drop-in center from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays until Aug. 14.

"Usually when kids come, they don't want to leave," said Terry M. Crump, Watertown Salvation Army office manager.

Children who attend the drop-in center can make crafts, participate in physical activities in the gymnasium, sing karaoke, watch movies or play board games, among other activities.

"It'll be a fun-filled day," Mrs. Crump said. "We don't ever leave the property, though, because we have too many kids."

Last year, the summer drop-in center averaged 40 to 60 children a day. Mrs. Crump said she expects to see more children attending this year.

Any elementary-age child is welcome, but all are encouraged to remain at the site, 723 State St., during the program and not repeatedly enter and exit the building, Mrs. Crump said.

Youngsters also may choose to stay for just a few hours or just eat breakfast and/or lunch provided by the federally funded Summer Food Service Program, which is administered locally by the Community Action Planning Council of Jefferson County Inc.

Guest speakers also will make appearances during the six-week program.

Mrs. Crump said the free, five-hour days will give area children the chance to do something fun this summer without their parents having to worry about extra expenses.

"It's to get kids off the street and give them some kind of a structured program," Mrs. Crump said. "This gives kids a place to go, something to do in a safe environment, and two good meals a day."
