Save the River applauds Congressman John McHugh for voting in support of the American Clean Energy and Security Act (HR 2454), the landmark climate change legislation passed by the House of Representatives in late June. Rep. McHugh's leadership was critical in securing provisions in this legislation to reduce acid rain and mercury pollution, both of which cause serious harm to the north country's waterways, forests and wildlife.

The science is clear. Global climate change is already occurring and there is an urgent need for coordinated federal action and leadership to reduce global climate pollution. As those of us who live, work and play in the north country all know, our local natural resources form the backbone of our lives and livelihoods, and climate change is a serious threat to them. For instance:

* Climate change forecasts indicate that water levels on the St. Lawrence River will seriously decline in the next 50 years, impacting recreational boating and commercial navigation.

* Agricultural production, including dairy, fruit and maple syrup production, is likely to be adversely affected.

* Climate change will seriously impact winter recreation and the businesses that rely on it.

Though the bill was imperfect, it is important to act now. The cost of doing nothing is simply too great. The longer we wait, the more challenging and costly it will be to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the heavier the toll will be on the north country's environment.

Congressman McHugh's vote was in step with his long record as an advocate for the protection of the north country's environmental and natural resources and we thank him for his leadership.
