Cancer is a chronic disease affecting approximately 524 individuals in Jefferson County and 496 in Lewis in 2008. Cancer's effects are felt not only by the cancer patient but also by their families and their communities.
According to the New York State Cancer Registry, Lewis and Jefferson counties annual incidence rates have increased. However, the annual mortality rates have declined, partly due to the fact more people are realizing the importance of cancer screening.
According to the American Cancer Society's 2008 Cancer Burden Profile, approximately three individuals in Lewis County and 10 in Jefferson are being diagnosed with cancer each week. Colorectal cancer accounts for 13.3 percent of all cancer cases in Lewis and 12.4 percent of all cancer deaths and in Jefferson County approximately 10.9 percent of all cancers and 9.6 percent of all cancer deaths. This reflects the lower screening and early detection rates for this cancer.
In April 2009 the Wellness Connection introduced a new screening tool for colon cancer called the fecal immunochemical test. This new test does not require dietary or medication restrictions. This new test is available to uninsured men and women 50 to 64. The screening is an easy take home kit that checks for hidden blood in your stool for those individuals without personal or family history of colon cancer or polyps.
For increased or high-risk individuals, consult with a surgeon or gastroenterologist to evaluate your family history and determine if you need a colonoscopy can be covered. If you are 50 or older and never been screened for colon cancer, talk to your health care provider. Colon cancer can be prevented with regular screening. It is easy, and the benefits can save your life.
The Wellness Connection of Lewis and Jefferson County Cancer Services Program (CSP) appreciates the support of all our medical practitioners, local hospitals and imaging centers, organizations and other "partners" for their continuing support of this program. Community members are always welcome to participate in helping us to raise awareness about cancer screening and early detection as a new "partner."
