Assemblywoman Dierdre K. Scozzafava is an excellent choice to represent the Republican Party in the upcoming race for the 23rd Congressional District. She has proven to be a hard worker for her constituents with known views that put her in the moderate wing of her party.

GOP county chairpersons from across the 11-county district selected her from a field of nine hopefuls seeking the party's nomination to run in a special election expected later this year if Rep. John M. McHugh is confirmed as secretary of the Army.

Among those who were interested in the nomination, Assemblywoman Scozzafava has the most legislative experience. A former Gouverneur village trustee and mayor, she has served in the Assembly since 1998. From her service through the last reapportionment, she has represented residents in St. Lawrence, Jefferson, Oswego and Lewis counties.

While some of her views may alienate more conservative Republicans, her positions put her in the political mainstream. Her support of women's issues has been consistent. Her efforts to improve the north country economy and responsiveness to the needs of workers has earned her endorsements of organized labor.

Assemblywoman Scozzafava has been a capable representative of the north country during her six terms. From her commitment and experiences, she will be a formidable candidate in the upcoming race and is well prepared to represent Northern New York in Congress.
